Dealing With Ticks In The Summer

Tick season is well underway in most of the country. Terminix just released a list of the top 25 tick-infested states that includes the usual suspects like Michigan, Ohio and Louisiana. But you might be shocked to see the dusty desert state of Arizona on the list and in the number one spot. Even if you keep your pet protected with vet-prescribed flea and tick medicine, ticks can still hitch a ride onto your dog’s fur and into your house.

Just one bite from a tick can lead to Lyme Disease, a lifelong illness that causes fever, rashes, headaches, joint stiffness, pain and fatigue. Your dog can get protection from Lyme disease with a simple vaccine, but humans don’t have that option. The best way to keep ticks off you and your pets is by using an essential oil protectant like Wondercide.

Headquartered in Austin, Wondercide uses plant power to repel fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and more. Wondercide comes in four scents: lemongrass, peppermint, rosemary and cedarwood. You can also buy concentrated yard sprays, essential oil flea and tick collars, and a 30-day topical. It’s safe, gentle and can be applied to your skin and clothing as well as surfaces in your home.

Wondercide and tick treatments can keep ticks from biting your dog, but some stragglers can still make it past these deterrents. If your dog has medium to long hair, a Tick Mitt can be used to pull the ticks off the hair without touching them with your bare hands. Made from microfiber, it has little threads that pull debris from the hair. You could also use a microfiber cleaning rag (it’s basically the same fabric), but the mitt makes it a lot simpler.

After you pull the ticks off, put the mitt into a mesh dryer bag (included)  to make sure the ticks are neutralized forever.
